John is a writer and documentary photographer based in Istanbul, Turkey. His work deals primarily with conflict, displacement and their longterm repercussions in the Middle East and beyond. He has been published by National Geographic, Wired, GQ, The New York Times, The Atlantic and many others.

He is a Pulitzer Center grantee and the 2019 Daniel Pearl Investigative Journalism fellow. He won the 2017 Kurt Schork Memorial Award for his coverage of the Battle for Mosul and has been shortlisted for a number of others including the Bayeux-Calvados Awards for war correspondents, Athens Photo Festival, One World Media Awards and Prix de la Photographie Paris.

He is HEFAT and RISC certified.
